A native of Europe which started to be planted here in the 1700's. Crocus-like Violet blooms early spring to summer. Highly noted for their silvery plumed seed-heads in summer after blooms. A very interesting look when the shiny hairy plumes of seed heads blow in the wind. When blooms are gone, enjoy their interesting seed heads. Entire plant is covered with soft, silvery hairs. Remains attractive until leaves die back to the ground late summer. Along with being very hardy, they have a long season of interest that makes them quite desirable. They work very well as a rock garden plant, alpine conditions, at the river and woodland edges, meadows, among the wild flowers, edging, front of your perennial garden or perfect among the spring bulbs and ground covers. Needs more water the first year, but becomes drought tolerant when established. Does well in normal and dry soil, with little or no care. Plus they self sow!
