The Catalpa Tree belongs to the Bignonia family, a group of mostly tropical plants. Catalpas have very large leaves and fruits which resemble slender hanging pods. The leaves are very broad, up to 10" long and 6" wide, and are short-pointed at the tip with a rounded or heart-shaped base. They are light green in color changing to a yellow or brown in the fall, but often falling to the ground before changing. The Catalpa Tree has beautiful white, bell-shaped flowers with purple and yellow markings inside the bloom. The flowers are around 2" long and wide and bloom from May though June, emitting a lovely fragrance. The pod-like capsules can be 8-20" long filled with winged seeds. A mature Catalpa Tree averages between 30-60' in height with a spread of 20-40'. It is a sight to see!
